At the start of 2006, to celebrate the 100^th anniversary of Prof. Bogumił Krygowski's birth, the decision was made in the AMU Institute of Geoecology and Geoinformation to prepare a numerical version of his Geomorphological Map of the Wielkopolska-Kujawy Lowland. The map, which was compiled in two stages, in the 1950s and '60s, was one of the major scholarly achievements of the Professor. He was its initiator, scientific editor, and the author of many of its sheets. It was the first geomorphological map of such an extensive area in Poland (about 68 thous. km²). The materials collected during its compilation were then used by Prof. Krygowski in many publications, especially in his synthesising book Physical Geography of the Wielkopolska Lowland. Part One - Geomorphology, which came out in 1961. Although the map has been repeatedly used for research and practical purposes over the last half-century, all this time it only existed in the manuscript form, which greatly limited its accessibility. Its numerical version prepared both in a printed and an electronic form is intended to solve this problem. The map presents the level of knowledge about the morphogenesis of the Polish Lowland from before 40 years, hence it certainly needs updating. The team of people who have prepared this edition of the map hope, however, that this fact will inspire scholars to undertake work on the geomorphological mapping of lowland areas, recently somewhat neglected.

The preparation of the 2007 numerical edition of the Geomorphological Map of the Wielkopolska-Kujawy Lowland would not have been possible without the tremendous effort of students, members of the Geoinformation Section of the Stanisław Pawłowski Scientific Circle of Student Geographers. More than 1,000 hours of work have gone into the georeferencing, digitisation and verification of the digitised material.

The Geomorphological Map of the Wielkopolska-Kujawy Lowland edited by B. Krygowski at a scale of 1:300,000 has been prepared in a paper version (a wall map and a folded map in a jacket) and in an electronic form (a CD with PDF-format files). The paper version with the CD will be sent to selected persons and institutions. However, the map impression is too small to be obtainable to every person interested. That is why the electronic version has also been made available over the Internet on this website.
