Geography From Space

CIRES Image (small) Europe, the second smallest continent in land area, contains roughly 684 million people. Consequently, there are few unpopulated regions and Europe is the most densely populated continent in the world. While Asia is the continent with the largest population - exceeding 3 billion - it also has the largest land area, with people distributed unevenly over 40 million miles.

In This Image: Two bright regions half-way down the left side of the image are the areas surrounding London and, across the darkness of the English Channel, Brussels, Antwerp, Rotterdam, and Amsterdam. To the southwest, lights mark out the distinctive shape of Spain. At bottom, a bright triangle marks the Nile River delta in Egypt. Much of Egypt's population is concentrated along the Nile, as evidenced by the string of lights illuminating the river's course.
