S 17-34-98 (250 mm)
Flight 41G; 37.5N, 4.9W, 12:04:06 GMT, 11 Oct 1984
In the photograph above, taken with the 250-mm lens, the details of the waves are easily seen, especially south of the wind-shear line, where the sun glittered from a nearly smooth sea surface. Even though from space the crests of the inferred waves seemed to be high, the measured heights from ships on the surface were no more than 10 centimeters. The apparent heights were caused by the textural changes in the sea surface responding in the sun's reflection.
