USS Enterprise, off Al Masirah

S17-35-71
Flight 41G: 21.6N, 60.8E, 10:36:54 GMT, 6 Oct 1984

Observations of ships and their wakes have always been of keen interest to astronauts and marine scientists. Usually there is little opportunity to identify the ships observed. In October 1984, however, during a flight of the Challenger, the oceanographic support for the mission by the navy permitted the identification of the USS Enterprise and her escort cruisers as the sources of ship wakes in the Arabian Sea off the island of Al Masirah. The aircraft carrier was headed east, and her two escorts were beginning their turn to complete the formation.
