This book was conceived in late 1985 and approved by the Chief of Naval Research as a project for the newly established Space Oceanography Division within the Ocean Science and Technology Directorate. The idea for the book came from the highly successful series of books on cloud imagery observed from unmanned space systems written by Robert Fett of the Naval Environmental Research and Prediction Facility.
