Flight 41G; 36.5N, 1.5W, 13:12:57 GMT, 7 Oct 1984
In this photograph, observational teamwork paid off. The crew spotted ten ships steaming toward Gibraltar along the coast of Spain, each ship leaving a stern wake that extended back into the western Mediterranean Sea. As the ships approached the southeastern tip of Spain near the coastal city of Almeria (not visible in picture), they had crossed a strong shear in the sea that was the extension of eddies at either end. All of the ship wakes were bent along the shear in the upper sea.
