An intriguing set of stern wakes was observed from the flight deck of the Atlantis during her maiden flight, in October 1985. Two stern wakes were observed passing Bahia Magdalena, and they merged towards the north. At first glance, the merging stern wakes were so unexpected that the astronaut observer was confused. A second look revealed, however, that two ships that had been sailing parallel courses had moved into tandem, one ship behind the other.
