Some 240 kilometers southwest of Isla San Ambrosia, off the coast of Chile, a series of cyclonic spiral eddies was observed in a choppy sea from the flight deck of the Discovery. On the southern edge, the eddy complex terminated in an arcuate boundary that apparently represented suloys similar to those observed by Soviet oceanographers in several areas of northern oceans.
