Pacific, East of Hawaii

61A-49-017
Flight 61A; 20N, 148.9W, 19:39:39 GMT, 3 Nov 1985

Orbiting over the tropical Pacific Ocean, some 500 kilometers east of the Big Island of Hawaii, the commander of the Challenger had a perfect view of a series of slicks at the sea surface that converged into a unique suloy pattern extending across the 60-kilometer field of view. Large ocean swell rolled across the sea from the northwest while the trade winds, producing the lines of small cumulus clouds, were blowing at speeds too low to result in whitecaps or recognizable wind waves.
